  16. after being robbed and beaten in her home; in Detroit. Parks
  17. provided impetus for the modern civil rights movement when,
  18. in 1955, she refused to give up her seat to a white man on a
  19. bus in Birmingham, Alabama. She showed similar resolve 39 years
  20. later when she resisted an assailant who broke into her house
  21. and demanded money; after striking her, he fled with $53. "So
  22. many of our children are going astray," lamented Parks the day
  23. after the incident as she moved to a guarded apartment building.
