- <p> RECOVERING. ROSA PARKS, 81, pioneer in the fight against segregation;
- after being robbed and beaten in her home; in Detroit. Parks
- provided impetus for the modern civil rights movement when,
- in 1955, she refused to give up her seat to a white man on a
- bus in Birmingham, Alabama. She showed similar resolve 39 years
- later when she resisted an assailant who broke into her house
- and demanded money; after striking her, he fled with $53. "So
- many of our children are going astray," lamented Parks the day
- after the incident as she moved to a guarded apartment building.
